Those among us

Sometimes I think of saints, and I wonder how many are among us. Visiting us, helping us, secretly, humbly. I wonder who they are. I wonder who exactly the angels are, the ones who are entertained uknowingly. Everyday I see hundreds of people, driving on the road, walking down the streets of this large city. I see them in the store, in the coffee shop, passing through. Naturally, my eye is drawn to those who stand out-- the tall, the striking, the well-dressed, the not-so-well dressed, the poor. And yet, I wonder how many times my eyes have merely grazed past the saints among us. The humble who dare not draw attention to themselves... in a culture where you are told to "stand out!" Not only that, but we are told that to blend into the background is to diminish in importance.

I think of Christ... perhaps He would escape my notice, were standing in a crowded room. His own beloved handmaiden, Mary Magdalene, did not even recognize Him. Lamenting for the crucified Christ in the empty tomb, she mistook the risen Christ for a gardener! (John 20:15-16) And again, on the road to Emmaus, two disciples did not recognize Christ when He met them on their journey, "But their eyes were restrained, so that they did not know Him." (Lk 24:16). How many times are my eyes restrained-- unable to notice anything beyond my own grief, my own agenda, my own self-absorption--least of all, Christ?

Just some thoughts for a Monday afternoon. A drizzly Monday afternoon at that! Glory to God! It's finally cool again!

Update: Today I went to the doctor... sounds like the ol' chest pains are just a product of heartburn, as I suspected. Oh well, I guess it was good to go just in case it was something more serious. I was given some samples of drugs that I'd rather not take, as they'd probably give me side effects that are worse than my actual problem. Oh well!

Very great post. It's something that we should always have on our minds so that we can always keep watch for when Christ does come and also to try and be aware of His Saints and watch there actions. Lord have mercy on us all when His second coming happens.

Your "grab bag: grabbed me! I wonder often those very things...... is my restless sleep- an angel trying to bring my thoughts to prayer?.....are cars thwarted from mine- as I travel on the highway? Christianity is such a paradox- the simple are wise- the lowly are raised up- childlike-open heart- brings wisdom- to serve unto death- brings life!

Rocking sweet Luke to sleep- the other night- I just stared into his most "angelic face"- and witnessed the ultimate state of peacefulness and Light. That's how we are to be daily, in the arms of God!

You know who I am!
