Remember two posts ago when I pondered finding the perfect "casual" dress to wear during the week? I think I've got it. This dress is a modified version of the Coffee Date Dress, which is another FREE pattern available at BurdaStyle. I added sleeves and split open the top half, creating a button-down bodice, so I can still nurse the baby. The fabric? An amazing vintage calico/ paisley, jersey-knit that I found at Goodwill back in the spring. I loved the print, but I sort of balked at it being a knit. I do not have a serger, and I don't have much experience sewing with knits. But it sewed up quickly, like a dream (I found these tips very helpful). The best part? I was able to omit the facings and the zipper, and it still fits nicely. It took me one evening to tape the pattern together, cut that and the fabric pieces, and sew together. Talk about instant gratification!
Now, if only I can find more beautiful cotton knit fabric (not stretchy, satiny, polyester stretch stuff-- there's plenty of of that stuff in thrift stores)... something tells me, though, this was a rare find. Regardless, I'll keep my eyes peeled.
OH, and the hair? Very short. I chopped it, thanks to "Licescapades 2011". I thought it would be emotionally difficult to cut, but I surprised myself when I felt quite the opposite after dumping 8 inches of hair into the garbage. Sort of freeing! And it's only hair. It will grow back.
I also hennaed it, because I read that helps kill lice and their eggs (I think it worked, too!) It was a lot of fun to do, but it's already faded quite a bit from when I did it last week. Temporary is good, though, I can't commit to anything permanent.
And the window shot? That's my view of the kitchen sink. I made a sign that reads, "Always give thanks. You are entitled to NOTHING." I'm hoping it will help me cultivate a sense of thankfulness. It's so easy for me to sulk around, feeling deprived and sorry for myself, when I should be so incredibly grateful for what's been given to me.
