A meme from the lovely Dawn! :)
five things i miss from childhood:
1) "Helping" my dad with his Saturday errands. I'd basically accompany him to not-so-exciting places like lumberyards and hardware stores, junkyards and junk stores. Afterwards he'd take me to 7-11, or some other quick-stop convenience store. My dad would buy me orange soda Big Gulps and Hostess chocolate cupcakes-- any kid's dream come true. I'm amazed I was not an obese child. Then again, I didn't eat like this every day. Sometimes he'd take me to the animal shelter, where I got to look at and play with the kittens and dogs. I'd beg him for a kitten, but it was always the same answer... :)
2) Bunk beds. I started out on the lower bunk, then I graduated to the top bunk when my little brother came along. I stayed on the top bunk until I left for college, actually. At night I would peek out the window which was right by my bed, and stare outside, at nothing in particular. There was something soothing about our boring little town, and watching the occasional stray cat wander in and out of the street lamp light.
3) Flying kites at the beach. Real kites. My kite was nylon, hot-pink, diamond shaped with a green gecko on it. There was a long yellow tail. I'd go to the beach with my family, and we would add extra kite string to the reel, and let it soar high until it was a speck in the sky.
4) Sleeping over at my friends' houses. Watching movies, making prank calls at night, eating pizza (or junk), and eating yummy breakfasts in the morning. That was always such a treat, and I guess I'll never really get to do that again. Kinda sad, oh well.
5) Pancakes on Saturday mornings! It was a tradition in our home. Mom made bisquick pancakes, and I'd lather mine in butter, syrup, or jam, blueberies or brown sugar. I'd always eat the first pancake plain, with my hands. Then the rest I'd eat with toppings. Come to think of it, I miss a lot of my mom's other cooking :)
I think everyone I know if has taken this survey, so I'm just gonna pass this on to my good friends Amy (another "gem" from my childhood days!!) and Espana!

Hi Xenia - I can tell you are from my generation, I can relate to your post! I put some photographs up on my blog if you are interested.
My girlfriend's and I still do sleep overs and we're in our mid-40's!!! We do the jammie thing, a chick-flick, junk food, and good breakfasts. Whadda ya mean ya can't do it anymore?????? WRONG!!!
I totally ran those same errands with my dad as a child! Now whenever I catch a whif of freshly cut wood, I think of all the trips with my dad to the lumber yard...
Errands with your dad! What a great memory! I'd forgotten my dad used to take me to look at the babies at the hospital!
Great memories - sleepovers, pancakes, all wonderful!
P - really? You still do sleepovers? We should do one big Orthodox women one, wouldn't that be great?
Hey Olympiada,
Glad to see you're comment! I did take a peek at the new pictures on your blog-- very cool! Thanks!
Philippa,
I had you in mind when I thought of sleepovers, actually. I think it's so cool that you and your pals still do that! Who knows? A sleepover isn't too far fetched :D
Meika,
I too get a bit sentimental when a whiff of fresh cut plywood drifts my way. Sometimes I like to meander through Fred Meyer's home improvement center, just for old time's sake.
:D
Mimi,
That's so cute that your dad took you to see the babies! Very, very sweet :) You might be on to something with that Orthodox sleepover-- we could do morning and evening prayers (something I was never really able to do as a 17 year old catechumen at sleepovers :D).
Thanks for your comments!

sweet post. :) love them all. errands with dad, that's cute. mimi has a good idea.
About those Saturday am pancakes.....I can remember always trying to save some pancake batter for my " lasttowakeup" daughter. The sure way to get you out of bed was to yell " Katie - last call for pancakes!!"
My favorite childhood memory of you- you sitting at the table enthralled with coloring or drawing- you'd stay there for hours- intently creating.... your little tongue slightly hanging out of your mouth- with each purposeful stroke of your crayon.
Momma,
I would have included my art memories, except that I don't have any reason to "miss" that aspect of my childhood-- I STILL draw for hours, enthralled, with my tongue hanging out! :)
However, I could go for a pancake breakfast... if you hadn't made those, I'm not sure I would have ever woken up on Saturday mornings! :)
Thanks everyone for your kind comments!
Xenia
