Breakfast of Champions.... or of a dieter with absolutely no will power

Well, blogger is being a pill and won't let me upload my breakfast.

Okay, it's a picture of my breakfast. Actually it's not my breakfast, it was a mid-morning snack... or perhaps it should be the last thing I eat today, since it's probably loaded with empty calories.

What was my glorious picture of? A cream-filled donut with maple frosting (think a bismack with maple frosting instead of chocolate) and a cup of Stumptown drip coffee. Oh dear. Oh. Dear.

This morning I decided to check out the New Seasons grocery store near our home. I knew they sold a good cup of drip, and I needed some drip, so I stopped over there for a "morning adventure." I stopped by the pastry shelf/cabinet thingy, and I stared inquisitively at the donuts, which are from a popular, quirky doughnut shop in Portland (Voodoo Doughnuts-- I know, sounds scary). But mmmmm! They looked so good. I was looking for a Cap'n Crunchberry donut in particular, because I had seen one before and wanted to get one for Job (who happens to love donuts and Cap'n Crunchberry cereal). Well, there weren't any crunchberry donuts. This was the point in time when I should have walked away from the pastries. But instead I stood there, enamored, my hot breath making fog circles on the display case glass.

I couldn't walk away, not without something yummy to go with my coffee. I considered buying a zucchini cranberry muffin instead.... not exactly low-fat, but at least a little heatlhier. But no, this was not a time for compromises. There are times for that, but this wasn't one of them.

I reached in with one of those little tissue squares and pulled out a round maple hole-less donut with a puncture in the side. I examined it, hoping the puncture lead to a cream-filled center. It did. Hurrah! Alas, it was time to make my escape.

Curious as to just how fabulous these famous little Voodoo donuts are, I took a bite of mine at a stoplight on the way home. Wow. When the light turned green, I didn't know whether to pull over and devour the rest of the treat, or savor it, one bite a day, for the next month.

Now at the risk of sounding Puritanical, I will say that there are several aspects of Voodoo Doughnuts (as a business)that I don't personally endorse or jive with (mainly the...ahem... adult novelty donut variety, amongst other things--- it ain't exactly Krispy Kreme's). But they do make a great doughnut, and I figure it's a fun treat to pick up at New Seasons from time to time.

Lord, bless this doughnut.
