ob la di, ob la da

I have to work tomorrow. I don't really want to go to work. I had today off, and I enjoyed it immensely. I slept in, cleaned the apartment a little, ate some leftover food from yesterday's lunch. There was no muzak running through my head throughout the entire course of the day. Now, that's happiness if you ask me. A mind free of annoying adult alternative pop music playing on repeat (at work, I have the pleasure of taking in more Stevie Nicks, John Mayer, Steely Dan and k.d. lang than you've ever heard in your life). grrrrr.

Last night Steve and I went to one of our favorite local restaurants to celebrate our third month wedding anniversary :) The restaurant was La Panaderia, an amazing, authentic, family owned Mexican food store/restaurant within walking distance of our apartment. It's not like your average Mexican food restaurant, with the singing mariachi band, and the polaroid wielding waiter who takes a picture of you in a sombrero on your birthday. There are no thick atmospheral murals of parrots and senoritas dancing... Just a simple dining area, with real food and real people. At most Mexican restaurants, you order a burrito and your friend orders tamales, and they both look the same-- a lump of meat wrapped in a tortilla of some kind, drenched in lukewarm red sauce and topped with various wilted garnishes. Not La Panaderia. It's a restaurant similar to what you'd likely find in Mexico.

The people who own it and work there have come to recognize us when we visit. We are often greeted with a familiar hello, and a warm smile. Last night we came in right at 8:00 (thinking they close at 9 pm... since we're never quite sure when they close). We were clearly the last customers, as the store and dining area were vacant. Clearly, they were closing up shop. But, they let us stay and cooked us our dinner, for which we were thankful. As we made our way out of the back exit, we passed the outdoor patio dining area where the owners' family sat, enjoying the evening. We thanked them for dinner, and made our way home with my leftovers.

Anyways, I didn't really mean to go off another advertising campaign... or maybe I did. Now I just can't remember what I was going to blog about in the first place. Harrummm.....

Oh yeah. I don't want to go to work. Last night and today have been very delightful and relaxing, with plenty of walks with my husband and visits to family and friends in town. We've both realized that we enjoy visiting with our friends and family, it kind of broadens our little world, which right now is a refrigerator box of an apartment :) So, that said, come and visit us. We'll take you to La Panaderia, we'll walk around until dark, we'll chat, and I'll make you a cappuccino for your drive home :)

Authentic Mexican food in Portland? I'm there - I'm so tired of the cilantro and sour cream covered stuff that passes here in Washington state.

My half-Mexican DH won't even go anymore.

Espana-- Picture fest! All right!!!

Mimi,
Yes, you should bring your husband down here to Newberg (1/2 hr. south from P-town). The first time I went to La Panaderia, it was with a group from work, headed up by a young guy from Mexico who insisted our Mexican food tastes would be forever altered after visiting :) While they do serve a few garnishes with certain entrees, they serve shredded cabbage instead of lettuce. Apparently, to my Mexican friend this was a mark of true authenticity ;) But what do I know?
hehehe
